At
the Northwest of the canaries archipelago lies the island
of La Palma, also known as la isla bonita (the beautiful
island) or the green island, because of its exuberant forests
and other extraordinary natural beauties. Its surface area
is 706 square kilometres and its population is 80,000 inhabitants,
distributed throughout 14 boroughs.
The
island is very high for its small land area. Its maximum
height is reached
at the Roque de los Muchachos at 2426 m.The central range
of the island exceeds 2,000
metres in most places.
